We could say, “Desperate times call for desperate measures”, however, I’d rather say, “Necessity is the mother of invention!”  Yes, there are a lot of desperate people out there right now frantically hoarding supplies to prepare for this monster virus that is relentlessly oozing like a steady stream of lava into our communities.  However, there are far more people coming up with creative solutions to weather this ominous storm surrounding our world!  The wonderful teachers in our organization are the perfect example of this as they have worked toward making the best of a bad situation in the past few weeks.  As soon as schools closed, many of us decided now was the perfect time to give online lessons a try rather than taking a break from teaching.  In addition, the board has been working tirelessly to create an online Achievement Day to salvage at least one of our spring events for the students.  With the number of student activities being cancelled, we are so fortunate to be able to keep our students learning and enjoying music.  I’ve even added students recently, because there are parents out there who are desperate to find an outlet and diversion for their home-bound youngsters!  I’m so happy that music has found its place amid the positive things coming out of this health crisis.

When I chose this year’s theme, “Embrace the Future”, I would have never dreamed that our future would take such a drastic turn!  The leap from studio teaching to online teaching became a necessity nearly over night!  I’ll have to admit that jumping on board the online lesson bandwagon hasn’t been easy, but so far, it has been totally worth it.  I can’t believe how much I am getting to learn about the students’ lives outside of the studio!  It is also really stretching my teaching techniques and my students’ listening abilities!  The remainder of this month’s newsletter is dedicated to providing some insight into some of our members’ initial experiences in teaching online.  If you haven’t tried it yet, maybe the following tips and anecdotes will give you the courage to give it a whirl….  In the meantime, please stay healthy!
