Greetings friends! Somehow it’s April already and even though the air conditioning is on again, I hope you’re staying cool and relaxed as the days and schedules become busier in anticipation of the end of the school year and the end of our DVMTA year. Still so much to do, but we can do it!

Special thanks to Corinne Walker, who gave us so many useful ideas and tips to use our singing voices in the studio at the March General Meeting. I’ve been singing up a storm, and have enjoyed implementing the ideas shared into my teaching. It’s made many concepts easier to teach!  Thanks also to Nicci Lovell for her wonderful solfege demonstration.

With much school testing done in April and the end of the school year, this can be a very stressful time for our students. Add to it the stress of preparing for Awards in Excellence and/or Achievement Day in May, and the anxiety level can increase even more.  Such a life adventure. It’s often difficult for students to believe that they can make it through all the daily challenges they face. One of my children’s favorite movies was “Pooh’s Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin.”  In one scene, Winnie the Pooh is concerned that Christopher Robin might not always be with him to help him. Christopher Robin tries to assure the bear that he’ll be alright on his own. He says, "You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." Wonderful advice for Winnie the Pooh and wonderful advice for our students, and even ourselves as we face our own challenges. What great opportunities we have as we teach and spend time with our amazing students, to help them to develop belief in themselves. They can do difficult things, they can overcome challenges, they can deal with disappointment, and they can grow into self-sufficient and capable young people who have so much to offer. Music gives us so much!

Enjoy your April, everyone!

Awards in Excellence Auditions were held Sat. April 14, 2018 at AZ Piano. There were 104 students from 15 DVMTA Teachers who auditioned, a dramatic increase from the past few years! What a success! The students came prepared with two memorized pieces from DVMTA's Repertoire List and performed for Adjudicators. There were 37 winners who performed in one of two Winners Recitals, Sat. April 21st at AZ Piano. Thank you to Alayne Favreau for organizing the event and being a fabulous cheerleader, and to her committee, Fei Xu, Hong Zhu, Wendi Heslop and Sara Pratt and other helpers. Congratulations to all who auditioned, and to the winners!

Using Your Speaking and Singing Voice in the Studio
presented by Corinne Walker

Members had the privilege of being instructed by Corinne Walker, a newer member of DVMTA. Corinne specializes in voice teaching, and gave members very practical and effective methods of improving our voices so that we can sing and speak  with greater ease, particularly as we teach. A wonderful meeting, and thank you to Corinne!

Happy Spring to you! Welcome to March, the month of Spring Break and perfect Valley weather! What a great time to catch your breath and prepare for the end of the year performance adventures.

Thank you to Nicci Lovell for her wonderful ideas for networking and marketing at the February General Meeting. She shared excellent suggestions and online resources to help us promote ourselves, our studios and our profession. We have such amazing DVMTA members with so many gifts and abilities, thank you for sharing!

Cavalcade of Rhythm was simply wonderful! The music was so fun; my students just loved all their pieces. The entertainment was exceptional with Jimbo the Circus Performer, our very own Ringmaster, Charles Newton, and of course, our DVMTA students. It was exciting and fabulous, and I can’t give enough thanks to our Cavalcade Committee: Hollie Lunt, Joni Walker, Kelli Riding, Heidi Morris and Charles Newton. No detail was left undone, and so many thanks are given to all DVMTA members for your help to support this wonderful event.

Our upcoming events include Awards in Excellence, Achievement Day and our Devoted Performer and Senior Scholar Recognition evening. What a great way to finish up our year. With the adventures of the Winter Olympics fresh in our minds, many lessons and experiences of amazing athletes can be applied by our students to prepare for the rigors and stress of the end of year events, performances and recitals. One of the most famous Olympians ever, Jesse Owens, said, “We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” And it takes amazing teachers and mentors to inspire the dream and give the tools to help students achieve their very best. What wonderful opportunities and adventures for us all as we strive for excellence!
