One of the great things about DVMTA is the variety of events that students can participate in. There is something for everyone, and Original Composition is an opportunity for pianists to grow their composing and performing skills. Students compose and record an original piece, and send it for evaluation. We were privileged to have Penni Scott use her talents to listen to and evaluate each composition and provide meaningful feedback. Over 100 students submitted compositions and performed at the Festival, which was held Saturday, November 18th and Sunday, November 19th at Southeast Valley Bible Church. Families and friends attended and heard some amazing compositions, and we cannot wait to see where these students' skills take them! We are thankful to the Original Composition committee, Buffie Meeker, Jessica Heidt and Joni Walker.
As we prepared for the upcoming holidays we were happy to come together and enjoy another DVMTA General Meeting. We met Friday, November 17th at My First Piano Recital Hall. Our presenter was Zoe Simmons, who taught us the importance of “Going slow(ly) to learn fast!” We learned about using different brain functions and processes to help our students learn faster and with less frustration. We learned about timing/motion, traveling/destination, pulse/rhythm, blocking/reading and much more. This is such a benefit for us and our students. Thank you to Zoe for the amazing discussion!
Happy November!
“Gratitude is a powerful catalyst for happiness. It’s the spark that lights a fire of joy in your soul.” Amy Collette “It’s a funny thing about life, once you begin to take note of the things you are grateful for, you begin to lose sight of the things that you lack.” – Germany Kent The holidays are just around the corner, and with them comes the excitement and anticipation of delicious feasts, gathering with family and friends, favorite traditions, holiday music, concerts, and giving thoughtful gifts. Our hearts are full of more gratitude, cheer, and kindness. Musicians are especially busy this time of year spreading peace and joy through the power of music. My students love holiday music, and it’s been a fun and busy couple of weeks helping them choose the perfect piece to learn and share with family and friends. It’s important that our students understand the impact they can have on others through their music. May we enter this busy holiday season with an attitude of gratitude. We have much to be grateful for as members of DVMTA. I’m especially grateful to associate with each of you, and for the friendships I’ve made. I’m grateful for our Board who work diligently to ensure our events are successful and run smoothly. I’m grateful for the opportunities DVMTA gives me and my students to learn and to grow. I wish you and your families a very happy holiday season! Tammy Shorts DVMTA President 2022-2024 Read the full November 2023 Newsletter October 28, 2023, was a wonderful day for 461 young DVMTA pianists as they presented their pieces in the annual Music Marathon. Students prepared diligently and were rewarded with audiences showing their appreciation for their hard work. This year's locations for the event included Superstition Springs Mall, Southeast Valley Bible Church, Copper Springs Retirement Community, Clearwater at Agritopia, North Chandler Place, and Mirabella at ASU. This is a great opportunity for pianists to perform in public in relaxed environments. Twenty-seven teachers participated and helped prepare their students, and students showed up with smiles and even some costumes. Many thanks to the Music Marathon committee, Sharon Vance, Nancy Chase and Diana Palmer, and all others who helped make this day so amazing.
